Integration of Pathology Data into CEW Clinics: Enhancing Data Quality and Service Evaluation
We are excited to share an innovative opportunity for pathology integration within Children of Excess Weight (CEW) clinics. This development, supported and prioritised by the NHSE national team, will enable the automatic extraction of longitudinal blood test data (spanning the past five years) from your Trust's systems directly into the CEW dashboard.
Why Pathology Integration Matters for CEW Clinics:
Currently, clinic data—including blood results, clinical metrics, and complications associated with obesity—is manually entered via spreadsheets or individual patient portals. This process is time-intensive and prone to variability. By integrating pathology data systems, we can:
Streamline Data Collection: Automate the extraction of essential lab metrics such as thyroid function, liver function, HbA1c, triglycerides etc.
Enhance Data Accuracy: Minimise manual entry errors and ensure the completeness of patient records.
Support NIHR Evaluation: Provide robust and standardised data for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to evaluate the efficacy of the CEW service.
Enable NHSE Decision-Making: Ensure that NHS England has access to comprehensive data for continued commissioning of CEW services.
Next Steps:
Identifying digital teams within your Trust: To move at pace, we need help identifying the right colleagues within your Trust who manage or oversee digital systems integration.
Selecting Trusts for a Phase 1 rollout: Once we have evaluated the responses to this pro-forma, we will contact all Trusts to let them know which Rollout phase they are in and engage with digital Trusts teams identified for the Phase 1 rollout. As we progress, we aim to extend this integration to all interested CEW clinics, ensuring widespread access to this critical functionality.
Participation: If your clinic is interested in joining the first phase or learning more about the rollout, please let us know.
Kick off meeting: If possible, we would appreciate your assistance in facilitating an initial project kick-off meeting to introduce Eclipse to your Trust’s IT Team.
Who we need to connect with
To support this integration, we need your help in identifying at least one colleague from your Trust’s IT or digital team. Specifically, we are looking for someone involved in managing data systems or overseeing integration workflows. Common roles to consider might include:
Head of IT or Digital Transformation
Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO)
Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Director of Integration
Integration Manager or Specialist
Head of Digital Development & Innovation
Head of Digital Services
If you're unsure who to contact, we’re happy to assist in identifying the right person. Your support in this step is essential to ensuring a smooth and successful integration process.
What We Will Do
Once connected, our technical team will:
Let you know which Phase of the Rollout your Trust will be in.
Share clear timelines for integration.
Work with your digital teams to establish the connection.
Ensure minimal disruption to existing workflows.
By working together, we can transform the management of obesity in children, strengthen the CEW service, and contribute to meaningful health improvements for the children and families we support.
